The US Senate confirmed on Tuesday Republican Chuck Hagel as President Barack Obama's next US Secretary of Defense. He won his confirmation 85 votes to 41.

4 Republican Senators, Thad Cochran, Mike Johanns, Dick Shelby from Alabama and Rand Paul had been joined Democrats and voted for Hagel's confirmation.

On Wednesday, Hagel will replace Leon Panetta.
