US President Barack Obama called German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday to offer his congratulations on her party’s electoral victory, stressing the two nation’s “close cooperation on key issues of regional and global concern.”
Merkel’s center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party finished with approximately 42 percent of the vote in Germany’s parliamentary elections. The victory caught many by surprise, including the CDU, and marks the party’s best electoral showing since reunification in 1990.
In his call with Merkel, Obama “noted his deep appreciation for Chancellor Merkel’s friendship, leadership, and steadfast support of the transatlantic relationship.” Obama stressed the two nation’s “close cooperation on key issues of regional and global concern.”
Following the CDU’s victory, Merkel will be tasked the formation of Germany’s next government, a process that is likely to consume the next couple of weeks.
