Tropical Storm Julia becomes hurricane in Atlantic

Tropical Storm Julia strengthened over the far eastern Atlantic Ocean on Tuesday and became the fifth hurricane of the Atlantic hurricane season, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

Julia reached hurricane status with maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour (120 kph) and was located some 330 miles (535 km) west of the Cape Verde Islands at 5 a.m. EDT (0900 GMT), the Miami-based center said.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Igor remained a powerful Category 4 storm but weakened slightly and changed directions in the Atlantic, the center said.

Neither hurricane posed any immediate threat to land or energy interests.

Igor, now moving to the west-northwest from its previous westward direction, was located about 750 miles (1,205 km) east of the northern Leeward Islands with maximum sustained winds at 135 mph (215 kph), the center said.

"Some fluctuations in intensity are possible during the next couple of days but Igor is expected to remain a dangerous hurricane through Wednesday," the center said.
