Two officers shot dead in California

World Bulletin / News Desk

Two officers were killed and a third was wounded Saturday while responding to a domestic disturbance in Palm Springs, California, local media reported.

At least one suspect is still sought by police amid an ongoing manhunt after the deadly encounter at approximately 12.30 p.m. (1930GMT), police chief Bryan Reyes told reporters.

"I'm awake in a nightmare right now," he said.

The two officers who died were identified as Jose Gilbert Vega, a 35-year veteran officer, and Lesley Zerebny, 27, mother of a 4-month-old.

The third officer was alert and talking to officers, authorities said.

Police have cordoned off a house and are not ruling out the possibility the shooter might still be inside.
