The U.S. House of Representatives on Friday approved legislation to strengthen federal offshore drilling regulations in response to the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The legislation has a long way to go before making it into law. It would have to be reconciled with separate energy legislation the Senate is trying to approve next week before that chamber leaves for its month-long summer recess.
