US to spend $1 trillion on nuclear arms

World Bulletin / News Desk

The United States have spent more on nuclear weapons research, development, testing and production in 2014 than ever before, even outdoing the amount it spent during World War II and the Cold War.

A New York Times report stated that the US will spend up to $1 trillion on nuclear defense in the next 30 years, in a bid to mordernize nuclear arms with more computerized weapons systems.

US President Barack Obama, who in 2009 won the Nobel Peace Prize for furthering a 'vision of a world free from nuclear arms,' has seen Congress pass policies that will keep the US active in developing its nuclear arsenal for another three decades.

The Department of Energy and the Atomic Energy Commission has spend at least $11 billion this year alone, and this sum does not include Defense Department spending on aircraft, missile silos or staffing that comes along with nuclear weapon development.

This compares with today's equivalent of $30.3 billion that was spent between 1940 to 1945, according to Brookings Institution estimates.
