A Virginia state senator has allegedly writter a letter to Syrian regime leader Bashar al-Assad praising his army for their gains in the Syrian civil war.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad posted ther letter on his Facebook page from Republican Senator Richard H. Black, who thanked the Syrian Army for its “rescue of Christians in the Qalamoun Mountain Range“.

“It is obvious that the war in Syria has largely been fought by vicious war criminals linked to al-Qaeda,” Mr. Black wrote in the letter dated April 1, which printed on Virginia Senate letterhead.

“I cannot explain how Americans, who suffered so grievously at the hands of al-Qaeda, were tricked into supporting the jihadists,” the Senator said.

“But I do know that many U.S. officials disagree with equipping and training the terrorists who penetrate your borders from the Kingdom of Jordan and through Turkey,” he added.

After praising Assad's father Hafez, the Senator concluded saying the he would “pray that the Syrian armed forces will continue to exhibit extraordinary gallantry in the war against terrorists.”

The U.S.'s official stance regarding the Syrian civil war is that it supports the opposition against the Assad regime, which it considers to be an unwanted dictatorship.

However, the rise of Al-Qaeda affiliated groups in the opposition has left many in the U.S. questioning this stance.
