Turkey's parliament speaker said on Thursday that Turkish parliament worked hard and implemented numerous regulations in an effort to solve the country's problems during the latest legislative year.

Holding a press conference on the activities carried out by the Turkish parliament during the latest legislative year, Parliament Speaker Koksal Toptan said 710 draft laws were submitted to the parliament and 116 of them became laws during such period.

Toptan described Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas' meeting under the roof of the Turkish parliament as the most important diplomatic event of the latest legislative year.

"This gathering, during which the two leaders addressed the general assembly of the Turkish parliament, was a historical meeting highlighting Turkey's role for the world peace," Toptan said.

Briefing reporters on the meetings he had with foreign officials in and out of Turkey, Toptan said he held talks with 17 presidents, 50 parliament speakers, 10 prime ministers, 13 ministers, 6 commission heads, 59 ambassadors and 16 foreign delegations during the said period.

Toptan said Turkish parliamentarians carried out successful activities all around the world for Turkey's introduction as well. He said Turkish parliament established friendship groups with nearly 100 countries so far.

Commenting on the budget of the parliament, Toptan said Turkish parliament's budget for 2008 had been determined as 442,271,259 YTL and 201,216,522 YTL of such figure was spent as of July 31st (1 USD equals 1.17 YTL).
