Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan said on Friday that Turkey attached importance Iraq to become an independent and sovereign country in real sense.

Speaking at a joint news conference with his Iraqi counterpart Hoshyar Zebari, Babacan said Turkey attached importance and supported SOFA agreement for Iraq to become an independent and sovereign country in real sense, Anadolu agecy reported.

U.S. troops would withdraw from the rural area at the end of June and gather in centers, he added.

"2009 will be an important test year for establishment of democracy in Iraq," Babacan said.

Babacan said Turkish President Abdullah Gul's visit to Iraq, planned to take place in December, had been postponed because of his health problems, noting the visit would take place soon.

Babacan also said PKK attempted on lives of thousands of people in Turkey for years.

"We have seen that there is a strong political stance in Iraq's central government against terrorist PKK organization. Now, dialogue with the local administration in the north of Iraq continues. Also works within the scope of a tripartite mechanism are underway. However, steps should become more tangible in a way that would lead to results," he added.

In his part, Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said that the plan was to activate the tripartite mechanism established by Turkey, Iraq and the United States to fight PKK. Zebari said Turkey, Iraq and United States would take political, economic, military and intelligence measures to eliminate the PKK.
