There have been 24 flights between an airbase in southern Turkey used by the US military and the notorious Guantanamo Bay detention camp, where numerous people, mostly suspected to be al-Qaeda members, have been imprisoned without charges being made against them, a report by Spanish authorities said.
The details on the flights were revealed in a report by the Spanish Center for Airports and Aviation, submitted to a Spanish court as part of an investigation on secret CIA flights to transfer terrorist suspects to Guantanamo. The investigation has been ongoing for three years. It was launched after a group of residents in Mallorca filed a legal complaint against the relevant authorities demanding an inquiry into claims that the airport in Mallorca was also used in such flights. Records from the center disclose that the first flight between İncirlik and Guantanamo took place in May 2002, Spanish newspaper El Pais reported. The last one was between Guantanamo and İncirlik. According to Spanish data, there were eight flights from İncirlik to Guanta-namo and 16 from Guantanamo to İncirlik.
