Forty-three of 52 workers trapped in a flooded rail tunnel in central China had been rescued, it was reported.
Rescuers were still pumping out water and mud from the tunnel as they searched for the remaining nine trapped workers, Xinhua reported.
The accident occurred about 240 yards from the mouth of the 8.6-mile Yesanguan rail tunnel in Enshi Tujia about 1 a.m. Sunday following heavy rains, the Chinese news agency said.
One of the rescued workers said water had gushed up suddenly. The force was strong enough to push a 30-ton truck more than 225 feet.
The rescued workers were taken to hospitals.
