9-year-old boy accepted in Hong Kong university

For 9-year-old math prodigy March Boedihardjo the third try was the charm in being admitted to study at Hong Kong's Baptist University, the university was announced Thursday.

The decision will make Boedihardjo, who has Indonesian and Chinese parents, the youngest university student in Hong Kong when he starts classes in September.

Two other colleges, the University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, had earlier turned down the boy's application for a degree course.

Instead, the University of Hong Kong offered the boy a visiting scholarship, while the University of Science and Technology said he was too young and offered credit bearing training courses for gifted children.

Boedihardjo applied to four Hong Kong universities. Boedihardjo had scored two 'A's' and a 'B' in this year's British advanced level examinations which are normally taken when students are 18.

The boy's family lives in Hong Kong but Boedihardjo has been studying in England for the past two years.
