A Cairo administrative court rejected Tuesday the application for release on parole of former Egyptian presidential candidate Ayman Nour.

Nour, who is serving five years imprisonment for forgery, had applied for parole on medical grounds.

The former lawyer, who was Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak's fiercest opponent in the 2005 elections, claims the case against him was politically- motivated.

Nour was charged with faking signatures on the membership applications needed to get his liberal al-Ghad party legally registered. The former lawyer denied the charges.

Nour's wife former TV anchor Gamila Ismail, also a spokeswoman for the party, said the case was fabricated to silence the popular Nour.

In February 2006, Nour was additionally accused of assaulting members of the ruling National Democratic Party and insulting Mubarak.

The US has repeatedly expressed concerns over the imprisonment of Nour and called for his release. Human rights groups and local activists have also taken up his cause.
