Abbas in Syria not to meet Hamas officials
A Palestinian source said Saturday that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' schedule has not yet included any time for a meeting with Hamas officials, IRNA reported.

Abbas will go to Damascus Sunday for an official two-day visit and meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Palestinian leaders residing in Lebanon.

His visit falls within the framework of his regional and international tours of Syria, Egypt, Greece, Italy and France with an aim to outline conditions in Palestine and its case in different levels.

The Palestinian source told IRNA that Abbas will spend the first day of his Damascus visit on meeting with Assad, his deputy Faruq al-Shara and Foreign Minister Walid Mualem.

He said the second day of the visit will feature meeting with the Palestinian Islamic movements' officials active in Syria, excluding activists of Hamas and of the Intifada Fatah led by Abu Moussa.

He added that Abbas will refuse to meet the officials due to intense foreign pressures.

The source said that Syrian officials are in constant efforts to arrange a meeting between Hamas officials and Abbas to strengthen national unity.

That's the second visit by Abbas to Damascus since he visited the capital in April 2008 to attend the 20th Arab League Summit.
