In an interview with Israel's Haaretz newspaper, Abbas said he had proposed secret talks with the United States and former Israeli prime minister Shimon Peres, who has led peace efforts in the past. He added that chances for peace were still strong in spite of the pending formation of a Palestinian government led by militant faction Hamas. However, Israel maintains that it will not deal any government led by Hamas and has dismissed Abbas in the past as "irrelevant".
