Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas last week said he will dismantle the Palestinian Authority, if Israel releases Hamas lawmakers as part of a deal for the return of captured soldier Gilad Shalit, an Israeli newspaper claimed on Wednesday.
It said the threat was delivered to the head of the Israeli army's central command by senior Abbas aide Hussein al-Sheikh.
Haarezt newspaper said that Abbas did not speak merely of "resigning," but of "dismantling the PA."
Israel arrested dozens of Hamas politicians, including ministers and parliament members.
A delegation from Hamas arrived in Egypt on Tuesday to discuss tensions with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah faction and the Islamist group's ceasefire with Israel, officials familiar with the plan said.
The delegation included Hamas leaders from the Gaza Strip. Moussa Abu Marzouk, a Hamas leader based in Syria, has also taken part in the talks in Cairo, the officials said.
