President Mahmoud Abbas has thanked Turkey for its efforts to find a solution to Gaza assault and to the Palestinian issue in general, adding, "we know that Turkey does not have a secret agenda. Turkey wants Palestinian people to live in peace."
Speaking at a joint news conference together with Turkish President Abdullah Gul, President Abbas, said that Palestinian people had been subject to a brutal and violent attack for three weeks.
He said that 1,300 people were killed, 5 thousand others were injured and 90 thousand people were left homeless. Abbas said that 15 percent of buildings in Gaza Strip suffered heavy damage.
He described what happened in Gaza as a murder. President Abbas said that whole world accepted that fact and no one could remain silent. He called on the international community to speed up delivery of humanitarian aid to Palestinian people. He also said that the blockage should be lifted and all border crossings should be opened.
President Abbas highlighted importance of ensuring a national compromise among Palestinian groups, rebuilding of Gaza and formation of a consensus government.
Replying to questions of reporters, Abbas said he agreed that Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) needed a reform, however, rejected the new PLO idea saying "trying to eliminate the organization or attempting to establish another structure would be a murder."
Noting that numerous groups in Palestine were not currently represented within PLO, Abbas said that rapid actions should be taken for their representation.
Abbas said all the groups wishing to become a part of PLO should accept the organization's laws and regulations. "Once they accept these, our doors are open to everyone," he said.
