Abducted police chief murdered in Chechnya
Russian RIA Novosti reported the body of a district Chechen police chief was discovered on Friday near the Chechen-Ingush border, a police source said.

On Thursday evening, two unidentified gunmen in civilian clothes dragged Ali Gaitamurov out of a village shop in western Chechnya's Sunzha district and forced him into a car at gunpoint. The vehicle was later found abandoned near a highway linking Chechnya and Ingushetia.

"Capt. Gaitamurov's body was found with gunshot wounds this morning 500 meters from the Chechen-Ingush border," the source said.

A spokeswoman for the investigation committee attached to the Chechen prosecutors' office said investigators were treating the officer's professional activities as a likely motive for the crime.

She added that Gaitamurov could have been killed for his weapon, as the abductors took the police chief's government-issued Makarov pistol.
