Abkhazia won't allow UN monitoring unless mandate changed
Georgia's separatist Abkhazia region said on Tuesday it will not allow United Nations ceasefire monitors to continue working on its territory unless their mandate is changed.

The mandate for the UN observer mission expires on Feb. 15. Sergei Shamba, separatist foreign minister, said the new mandate must reflect the separatists' assertion that Abkhazia is an independent state.

"If it does not correspond to our proposals we will not allow them in. We will not allow the UN mission in Georgia into Abkhazia," Shamba told Reuters by telephone.
