Afghan commander among blast dead

A suicide bomber detonated his explosives in a market in Afghanistan's southeastern town of Gardez on Thursday, killing a senior Afghan security commander and six others, an official said.

The apparent targets of the attack were Afghan security officials allied to foreign troops, said a spokesman for the provincial governor, Rohullah Samoon.

Among the seven killed were the senior security commander for neighbouring Logar province, his brother and three of his body guards, spokesman Aziz Ahmad Wardak told Reuters by phone from Gardez.

Twenty-four people were wounded, he said.
