The Afghan president Hamid Karzai's speech to thousands of people gathered at a Kabul sports stadium was cut off by a disturbance created by hundreds of people who were not allowed to attend the ceremony.

The Afghan president Hamid Karzai's speech to thousands of people gathered at a Kabul sports stadium was cut off by a disturbance created by hundreds of people who were not allowed to attend the ceremony.

Karzai, who has survived two attempts on his life, was speaking when one of his bodyguards interrupted him. The president then told the crowd: "brothers and sisters, with respect to everyone, we are finishing the ceremony here," state television showed.

A local journalist said the "disturbance accrued when people started throwing stones at a metal gate because they were not allowed to enter into stadium to attend the ceremony."

The event was to called to mark the sixth anniversary of the death ofr Ahmad Shah Masood, the former military leader of an anti-Taliban alliance who was killed by Al-Qaeda operatives on September 9, 2001.
