Ahmedinejad offers free referendum for Palestine
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Friday that Turkey-Iran cooperation could create a synergy crucial for regional and global peace.

Ahmedinejad told a press conference in Istanbul that certain countries did not want Turkey and Iran to develop, adding their nuclear energy programme was nothing more than an excuse in front of their growth.

Commenting on Turkey's EU bid, Ahmedinejad said Turkey's accession would be beneficial both for the region and the EU.

He said Turkey was a highly civilised country serving as a secure bridge in the region.

"But, look how many conditions they (EU) are imposing on Turkey. They don't want our countries to grow," said Ahmadinejad.

Ahmedinejad said his people sincerely loved Turkish nation, noting that the friendship between the two nations was deeply rooted in history.

He said Iran would always be side by side with Turkey.

Palestinian Issue

Ahmedinejad referred to Iranian proposal for a referendum to be held towards a solution in the Palestinian issue. He said this would be a very democratic and humane solution.

"We have proposed a free referendum for the solution of this 60 year old problem. All Palestinians, Muslims, Christians and Jews may attend this referendum. This is in line with the main structure of the UN. However, the 'defenders of democracy' don't sympathise with our proposal," Ahmedinejad said.
