The ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) will play the early election card irrespective of the Constitutional Court's decision about the first round of presidential polls.
Speaking to Today's Zaman, AK Party parliamentary group deputy chairman Salih Kapusuz noted that the starting gun for early elections has fired and that the Constitutional Court's decision no longer matters. "At this point, the parliamentary muscles must be set to work. Whether the decision is favorable for us or not, we will give a start to the early elections process. We may hold at most one more round of the presidential elections.This is because it is obvious that even if the decision is favorable for us, it will be difficult for us to secure the 367 votes needed. In this case, we will have to elect the new president after the parliamentary elections. Indeed, under the Constitution, a parliament which fails to elect a president shall dissolve itself. Even if we manage to elect the president, we will push forward the early parliamentary elections in the aftermath of the presidential poll. At this moment, we have nothing to do but go for early elections,” said Kapusuz, who maintained that the AK Party is ready for the elections and will multiply its votes.
