Algeria, U.S. sign agreement on nuclear co-op

Algeria and the United States on Saturday signed an agreement on nuclear cooperation for peaceful use, the first accord between the two countries in the field, the Algerian Ministry of Energy and Mines said.

Algeria and the United States on Saturday signed an agreement on nuclear cooperation for peaceful use, the first accord between the two countries in the field, the Algerian Ministry of Energy and Mines said.

The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Algerian Minister of Energy and Mines Chakib Khelil and U.S. Ambassador to Algeria Robert S. Ford.

According to the ministry, the agreement aims to build "mechanisms of cooperation and multiform exchanges".

The two countries will endeavor to "organize exchanges of the experiences and visits of experts, and also to conduct some programs together in the nuclear field", said the ministry.

The agreement also foresaw projects that would allow researchers from Algerian nuclear centers to tour U.S. nuclear facilities to benefit from their advanced nuclear technology and expertise, the ministry added.
