Attack on Berlusconi delays Turkey-Italy summit

Turkey-Italy Intergovernmental Summit planned for this week was called off after a physical attack on Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, officials said on Monday.

Berlusconi was hospitalized on Sunday with several injuries in his face after a man with a history of mental problems hurled a statuette at him at the end of a political rally in Milan.

Following phone conversations, Turkish and Italian officials have decided to postpone the summit scheduled in Rome for Wednesday to an uncertain date.

The summit was planned to gather Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi along with seven Turkish and eight Italian ministers.

First summit of Turkish and Italian governments was held in Izmir, Turkey in 2008 and leaders had decided to hold the meeting once every year on a rotating basis.
