African Union (AU) envoy to Darfur Salem Ahmad Salem began here on Wednesday his talks with senior Sudanese officials to prepare for the prospective negotiations over the troubled region of Darfur slated early next October.

Salem said in a statement following his meeting with the Sudanese foreign minister Lam Akol that the talks focused on the date and venue of such meeting.

He added the meeting also touched on outcomes of the Arusha gathering with the rebels objecting the Abuja accord.

Salem urged the government of Sudan and the concerned parties to adhere to ceasefire in order to pave the way for achieving a settlement.

he added the road was still long and there are many big challenegs to the sought peace.

He said he would hold talks with President Omar Al-Bashir and his deputy Ali Othman Taha before heading to Darfur and meet representatives of the displaced persons and tribal officials.

On his part, foreign ministry spokesman Ali Al-Sadeq reiterated the government's adherence to the ceasefire and its readiness to negotiate at any time specified by the mediators and in any African country to be agreed on for hosting negotiations. The conflict in Darufr that broke out in early 2003 killed some 200,000 people and displaced more than two million others.
