Australia won't reduce Iraq troops like US: Howard
Australia will not reduce its troops in Iraq although the United States has moved to scale down its military presence there, Prime Minister John Howard said Friday

Howard said he had received an advance briefing on the US plans to pull out 21,500 combat troops by mid-2008 from President George W. Bush a few hours before the president unveiled them in a US prime time television address.

Howard said the US draw-down would not affect Australia's deployment of about 1,500 troops in the Gulf, which includes a battle group of 515 troops and 100 military trainers based in Iraq.
