Austria arrests 7 over Chechen exile murder

Austrian police arrested seven Chechen men suspected of having helped murder a Chechen exile who had accused the Moscow-backed government in Chechnya of kidnapping and torture.

Police officials told a Vienna news conference the seven were arrested on Wednesday in raids on 18 flats across Austria. They said they could not say with any certainty if the murder had been political or had another motive.

The exile, Umar Israilov, was shot dead earlier this month in a Vienna working-class district. Police have so far arrested one Chechen man who owned the car in which the killers escaped.

Israilov had accused Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov of participating in kidnappings and torture sessions in a complaint filed in the European Court of Human Rights in 2006.

The 32-year-old Kadyrov is a former Chechen fighter who switched sides and became pro-Moscow and became regional leader with Russia's backing. He denies any involvement in kidnapping or torture.
