Avalanche in Russian south kills four: Report
An avalanche in Russia's southern region of Kabardino-Balkaria in the North Caucasus killed four mountain climbers on Friday, state-run RIA news agency reported, citing the local emergencies ministry.

"As a group of tourists were reaching the top of Gedan-tau (mountain), an avalanche came down on them," RIA quoted local ministry spokesman Kantimer Davydov as saying.

He said four people were killed and five injured by the avalanche, which took place around 17:00 Moscow time (1400 GMT) on the mountain, which is 3,700 metres (12,150 ft) high.

Winter avalanches are common in Kabardino-Balkaria, which despite its proximity to turbulent North Caucasus regions Chechnya and Ingushetia, hosts many ski resorts.

Its many high mountains have also made the region a favourite for Russian lovers of extreme sports.
