The Azerbaijani electorate is going to cast their votes to determine 15,682 assembly members for a total 1718 municipalities.

Azerbaijan started to vote for local elections on Wednesday.

About 31,000 candidates from 18 political parties has registered for municipal members in the country, Trend News Agency reported.

The Azerbaijani electorate is going to cast their votes to determine 15,682 assembly members for a total 1718 municipalities.

The assembly members will then elect the mayors from among them.

Municipal elections were held twice in 1999 and 2004 so far.

Web-cameras have been installed in 500 polling stations in accordance with the Azerbaijani Central Election Commission's (CEC) decision. About 289 web-cameras were installed in 37 districts of the country, including the Absheron region, 189 in Baku and 25 in Nakhchivan. Azerbaijan say the election process can be observed through the Internet.

Azerbaijani Central Election Commission said it registered 48,388 observers, including 1,160 local observers and 52 foreign observers.
