Azerbaijan to release Russian cargo for Iran plant

Azerbaijan said Wednesday it will release a shipment of Russian equipment for Iran's first nuclear power plant that has been held at the border since late March.

Azerbaijan to release Russian cargo for Iran plant
Heat-isolating equipment for the Iranian plant in the port city of Bushehr was detained at the Azeri-Iranian border on March 29.

Russia's state-run OAO Atomstroiexport, which is building the light-water reactor, has accused Azerbaijan of deliberately obstructing the cargo.

Azerbaijan's Deputy Foreign Minister Araz Azimov said the Russian company has now presented all the paperwork necessary to allow the shipment through.

''The matter will be solved in the nearest future,'' he told reporters, without giving an exact date.

Iran is paying Russia more than $1 billion to build the light-water reactor. Construction has been held up by disputes between Tehran and Moscow over payments and a schedule for shipping nuclear fuel.
