Baykal complains of ties level between Turkey-EU

Deniz Baykal, leader of Turkey's main opposition party, the Republican People's Party (CHP), said on Tuesday that that Turkey-the EU relations were far from the desired level.

Baykal, who is currently in Brussels to hold a series of talks, said at a panel discussion hosted by the European Policy Center (EPC), that Turkish public opinion's support to Turkey's EU membership dropped down to 30 percent.

His visit comes after PM Tayyip Erdogan's message that "opposition is totally against European membership".

"The CHP has always supported Turkey-the EU relations and Turkey's accession to the Union. It will maintain its support in the future. Turkey, which has always been a part of Europe, shares the same values and principles with the EU," he said.

Referring to the Cyprus issue, Baykal said that the CHP supported the recent negotiation process aiming to find a permanent and comprehensive solution.

Earlier in the day, Baykal met with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.

Baykal is expected to return to Turkey on Wednesday.
