Belgian Court to retry far-left DHKP-C members

Belgian Court of Cassation will retry members of far-left militant DHKP-C who were acquitted in Belgium four months ago.

Court of Cassation annulled the verdict of the court in Anvers which acquitted members of DHKP-C in February 2008 and designated DHKP-C as "terrorist organization, crime organization and gang". Court of Cassation also said terrorist organization members could also be tried in Belgium for the crimes that were committed by them in other countries.

On February 7th, 2008 the court in Anvers acquitted Dursun Karatas, Zerrin Sari, Sukriye Akar and Bahar Kimyongur while sentenced Fehriye Erdal, Musa Asoglu and Kaya Saz to suspended jail terms ranging from 21 months to 3 years.

On February 28th, 2006, the Criminal Court in Bruges sentenced ten members of the DHKP-C including Erdal, Karatas, Asoglu, Saz, Kimyongur, Sari and Sukriye Akar Ozordulu to imprisonment, ranging from 4 years to 6 years for crimes they committed in Belgium. The Gent Supreme Court of Appeals ratified and increased some of the sentences on November 7th, 2006.

While Asoglu, Saz, Ozordulu and Kimyongur were serving their imprisonment sentence at that time, Erdal, Karatas and Sari, who were kept under police surveillance, escaped two days before court decision.
