Belgium's Senate on Thursday approved the Lisbon Treaty signed by European Union members in December and designed to speed up decision making in an enlarged EU.

The reform treaty was approved 48-9 in the Belgian Senate and the treaty will now go to the country's lower house.

In total, the treaty must be ratified by seven legislatures in Belgium, due to the country's mix of regions and its three language groups.
