The Mideast mission of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair is doomed to fail because it aims to market the US visions in the region, a state-run Syrian newspaper said Tuesday.

"How could we believe that there is a political movement by the Quartet under the leadership of Blair, the close ally of (US President George) Bush in all the region's troubles?" said Tishrin government newspaper in an editorial.

Blair opened his mission Monday in Jerusalem on behalf of the "Quartet" of Mideast mediators.

"All indications point to Blair marketing only the US vision, which is hostile to the Palestinians and the region in general, and his mission is doomed to failure because it doesn't carry anything but illusive promises and intentions similar to those of Bush made six years ago to establish two (Israeli and Palestinian) states," Tishrin added.
