The police officers were transporting suspects to a detention center, when their vehicle exploded in the Leninsky district of Grozny.
"None of the prisoners were hurt. They were returned to a pretrial detention center," the source was quoted by the RIA Novosti news agency as saying.
An investigation team is working at the scene to gather evidence.
This is the second police death in two days in Grozny. A police officer was gunned down on Monday evening.

A vehicle transporting prisoners was exploded in Grozny, the capital of Chechnya, killing at least one police officer and having five others wounded, a source in the local police said Tuesday.
