Workerss cutting an icehole in a frozen river as part of an Orthodox ritual when Russians jump into near-freezing water found a human head, RIA news agency reported on Monday.
The head was discovered by workers as they prepared for the Epiphany service commemorating Christ's baptism, in the River Jordan, in the South Russian city of Saratov, RIA news agency reported, quoting sources in the local rescue services.
"Around noon yesterday, rescuers and divers submerged to check the water ahead of Epiphany bathing, and discovered a bag containing a ball-like object," RIA reported the source as saying.
When they opened the bag, they found a severed head and a brick inside, RIA reported.
A local spokeswoman for the Emergencies Ministry said she could not confirm the report and had spoken to workers at several regional sites who said they had not found a torso.
An investigation is now underway.
