Bomb blast kills Iranian nuclear physics professor

A nuclear physics professor at Tehran University was killed Tuesday by a bomb-rigged motorcycle parked outside his home in Iran's capital, state media reported.

"University professor killed in Tehran remote control bomb blast," English-language Press TV said in a breaking news headline.

The blast shattered the windows of his home in northern Tehran's Qeytariyeh neighborhood and left the pavement outside smeared with blood and strewn with debris.

It identified the victim as Massoud Mohammadi, a lecturer at Tehran University, and said he was killed near his home in a northern part of the capital by a booby-trapped motorcycle.

"Massoud Ali-Mohammadi was a professor in the nuclear field and there has so far been no arrests of those behind this incident," the semi-official Fars News Agency quoted prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi as saying.

A senior Interior Ministry official, Mehdi Mohammadifar, said the motive for the bombing was under investigation, the semi-official Mehr News Agency reported.

Iran's state broadcaster IRIB said anti-revolutionary elements were behind the killing of a Tehran University professor on Tuesday, describing it as a terrorist act.

"Mr Massoud Mohammadi, a committed and revolutionary Tehran University professor, was martyred this morning in a terrorist act by anti-revolutionary and arrogant powers' elements," IRIB said on its website. Iran usually refers to its Western states as "the global arrogance."

The official IRNA news agency said it was not yet clear how many people were killed in the blast, suggesting there may be more than one victim.

Iran, the world's fifth-largest crude oil exporter, says its nuclear programme is aimed at generating electricity so that it can export more of its gas and oil, dismissing West claims it is a cover to build nuclear weapons.
