Bomb blast kills three US soldiers in northern Iraq

A roadside bomb killed three U.S. soldiers in northern Iraq on Tuesday when it exploded near an American patrol, the U.S. military said.

The blast occurred just before midday, the military said in a statement, giving no further details. The statement did not say where exactly the attack had taken place.

U.S. forces can stay in occupied Iraq until 2012 under a bilateral military deal.

August was the worst month for civilian casualties in Iraq since April.

Last month, four U.S. troops died in attacks. More than 4,300 U.S. troops have died in Iraq since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, official figures show.
