Bomb damages courthouse in south Italy

A homemade bomb exploded on Sunday outside a courthouse in the southern Italian city of Reggio Calabria, home to one of Italy's most feared crime groups, damaging its entrance but causing no injuries.

Police sources said the device, composed of explosives on top of a gas canister, detonated early on Sunday when there were no passersby.

Security cameras filmed two men, their faces concealed by helmets, arrive on a motorcycle and place the device outside the courthouse, a source involved in the investigation said.

He said authorities who are examining the remains of the bomb believe the 'Ndrangheta crime group may be involved.

The port of Reggio Calabria is one of the main cities of the southern region of Calabria, home to the 'Ndrangheta which emerged from the shadow of the Sicilian mafia in the 1990s to become one of Italy's most powerful crime groups.
