Bosnian PM sacks foreign minister

Bosnia-Herzegovina's Prime Minister Nikola Spiric said Monday in Sarajevo he was sacking Foreign Minister Sven Alkalaj after certain irregularities were discovered in his work.

Spiric said he was also sacking two deputy ministers: Deputy Defence Minister Igor Crnadak and Deputy Minister for Civil Affairs Senad Sepic.

Last month Bosnia-Herzegovina's Central Election Commission accused Alkalaj, Crnadak and Sepic of violating the country's law on conflict of interests and banned them from participating in elections for the next four years.

Alkalaj spent some time acting as member of the steering board of a local insurance company while obtaining the ministerial duty, reports said.

The procedure to replace the three ministers has to be confirmed by Bosnia-Herzegovina's Parliamentary Assembly, Spiric said.

"I expect the parliament to offer a definite solution in this case. If they agree to replace the minister and two deputy ministers, then I expect the leading political parties to suggest us new candidates as soon as possible," Spiric told reporters in Sarajevo.

Reacting to the accusation, Alkalaj earlier said "the (election) commission did not accept the facts, but was rather run by political motives."
