The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said Tuesday that breastfeeding babies within one hour from birth can prevent a significant number of neonatal deaths in developing countries.
According to UNICEF exclusive breastfeeding to the age of six months could prevent the deaths of 1.3 million children under the age of five each year.
This data is based on a study published on Ghana that shows that 16 percent of the neonatal deaths can be prevented by breastfeeding infants from day one, rising to 22 percent if breastfeeding begins within one hour of birth.
UNICEF says that the theme of this year's World Breastfeeding Week is "early initiation of breastfeeding".
