Britain said on Tuesday it was investigating whether a British soldier killed in Afghanistan at the weekend was the victim of a "friendly fire" incident.
Sean Dawson, 19, died when NATO forces ambushed suspected gunmen in the Musa Qala district of southern Helmand province on Sunday.
Britain's Ministry of Defence said at the time he had died from a gunshot wound sustained during an exchange of small arms fire.
"Early indications suggest that his death was possibly caused as a result of `friendly fire'," the ministry said in a statement.
"This is currently being investigated and no further comment can be made until the inquest".
The ministry claimed the operation in which he died was not linked to the offensive against Taliban in their southern stronghold of Marjah.
