British socialists establish Friends of Turkey Group in EP

A "Friends of Turkey Group" has been established at the European Parliament (EP) by the United Kingdom Labour Party deputies serving in the EP on Tuesday.

Four members of the British Labour Party from the EP Socialist group, Claude Moraes, Richard Howitt, Robert Evans and Mary Honeyball and four members from the British parliament, David Lammy, Meg Hillier, Joan Ryan and Andy Love have collectively formed the "Friends of Turkey Group" at the EP.

Speaking at a reception held to welcome the establishment of the new group in the EP, the chairman of Turkey's main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Deniz Baykal said that he is a friend of the British.

We will continue to cooperate with the British, Baykal said.

Baykal pointed out that the European Union (EU) was facing economic problems due to delay in implementation of Lisbon Treaty and the global financial crisis adding that such realities made it difficult for the EU to expand its borders.

Every one should preserve optimism at a time when Turkey is also experiencing certain difficulties, Baykal said.

The "Friends of Turkey Group" in the Labour Party will contribute to this optimism, Baykal noted.

"Turkey belongs in Europe. We have a common history. We have always considered ourselves a part of Europe. I have no doubt that our future would be a common one as well. This is not just to the benefit of Turkey but also Europe itself," Baykal stressed.

71 percent of all oil reserves and 72 percent of all natural gas reserves in the world are the neighbors of Turkey, Baykal said.

Cooperation in the energy field between Turkey and the EU is inevitable, Baykal noted.
