Brown sole candidate for party leader
Treasury chief Gordon Brown was confirmed Thursday as the next leader of the Labour Party after colleagues in the House of Commons overwhelmingly backed him as the only candidate to be the new prime minister.

As nominations for the leadership post closed, the party said Brown will be the only person in the running for the leadership, with support from 313 of 353 Labour lawmakers.

To run for leader, he needed the backing of 45 of the party's members of the House of Commons. Prime Minister Tony Blair said last week he would be stepping down by June 27.

Even though he is the only candidate, Brown will carry on with campaign events, the party said. Six candidates for deputy prime minister will also be vying for support.

Brown won't officially be confirmed as Labour's leader until the party's leadership convention June 24.

The only other declared candidate, John McDonnell, a former trade union official, said Wednesday he was quitting because he did not have enough support.
