Ankara should establish "political dialogue" with Iraqi officials in order to get them to acknowledge on a fundamental level that the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) is a terrorist organization that has launched attacks on Turkey from Iraqi soil, a top US diplomat visiting Turkey said on Thursday.
US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns, who held talks with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Wednesday, stressed that his country is the biggest supporter of Turkey in its fight against the PKK. The US does not approach positively the idea of Turkey's launching a military operation into Iraq because such a move would deepen ongoing instability in the neighboring country, Burns also said.
"A political dialogue needs to be built between the Turkish government and the Iraqi leaders. We hope that the Turkish government and the US administration will convince the Iraqi leaders that the PKK is an organization which resorts to violence, which doesn't deserve political support and which should be kept away from the Turkish border," Burns said in remarks translated to Turkish in an interview with private NTV news channel.
