The prosecutor accused Büyükanýt of trying to influence the courts by praising a soldier who has been charged in connection with a bombing in Þemdinli, a bookshop blast that killed one person and triggered clashes between demonstrators and Turkish security forces in which several more people were killed.
The bombing raised questions of whether Turkey has succeeded in purging rogue elements from the security forces, accused of summary executions, extortion, kidnappings and drug-smuggling in the Southeast in the 1990s, the peak years of separatist PKK fighting there. NTV news channel said Gen. Özkök was disturbed by the allegations against Gen. Büyükanýt and was considering defending the general by in turn filing a complaint against the Van prosecutor for "exceeding the boundaries of his authority."
Meanwhile, Hakkari Prosecutor's Office has filed an application at the Interior Ministry to be allowed to investigate former Hakkari Governor Erdoðan Gürbüz, Þemdinli local administrator Cihat Feslihan and Hakkari Gendarmerie Commander Colonel Erhan Kubat on Monday.
