CAIR: Call for prayers for rain in USA
The Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-FL) today called on mosques and Islamic centers across the state to offer prayers for rain in draught-stricken areas during this week's Friday congregational services, or "Jummah."

CAIR-FL is also calling on people of other faiths to offer prayers for rain according to their own religious traditions. Florida Governor Charlie Crist has encouraged all Floridians to pray for rain.

The Islamic civil rights group initiated its call for prayers in response to the governor's request and to provide a spiritual dimension to the Florida water crisis.

The special Islamic prayer for rain, called Salatul Istisqa (sal-AT-al- istis-KA), was performed by the Prophet Muhammad and is traditionally offered during times of drought.

In Salatul Istisqa, the Prophet would offer supplications such as: "O God, give us a saving rain. . .O God, (Your) servants, land, animals, and (Your) creation are all suffering and seek protection. . .O God, remove from us the hardship, starvation and barrenness, and remove the affliction from us, as no one removes afflictions save Thee."

Due to record-low rainfall, the South Florida Water Management District has enacted mandatory Phase II Water Restrictions, which require residents and businesses to limit outdoor water use. In addition to water shortage, the Miami Herald reported "more than 230 fires blackened nearly 100,000 acres in 52 of the drought-baked state's 67 counties."

"We appreciate Governor Crist's leadership in calling for the prayers," said CAIR-South Florida Executive Director Altaf Ali. "We will also pray for the safety of the courageous firefighters who are battling fires across Florida."

CAIR, America's largest Islamic civil liberties group, has 32 offices and chapters nationwide and in Canada. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
