The Liberals and New Democrats, two main oppositions, joined the ruling Conservatives, voting 230 to 45 against a motion by a third opposition Bloc Quebecois, which called for more funds for forestry, manufacturing sectors and post-secondary education.
Under Canada's parliamentary law, each of the three oppositions could table an amendment to government's budget. Either the passage of an opposition amendment or the defeat of government's budget would topple the government, triggering an early election.
The minority government faces a series of such votes early next month. But the Liberals have vowed to keep the government in power.
