Venezuela is sending humanitarian aid to Gaza.
President Hugo Chavez said Sunday that a plane carrying 12.5 metric tons of medicine is preparing to leave for Egypt, which will transport the supplies into Gaza.
"We count on the support of the Egyptian government and the United Nations so this life-sustaining shipment can reach the Palestinian people," Chavez said during his "Alo Presidente" radio talk show.
Chavez said a second, 80-tonne humanitarian shipment would leave Venezuela for Gaza next week.
Chavez has strongly condemned Israel's military offensive in Gaza. He expelled the Israeli ambassador last week to protest air and ground strikes that have killed at least 870 Palestinians.
